As an artistically inclined person, I've been using my gifts far too long to further my addiction.
As soon as I joined recovery groups, I found music to be a terrific outlet for the heavy emotions and feelings I had been bottling inside for years.
Here are a few songs I wrote and recorded from 4-2024 to 3-2025.
There are more to come along I'm sure. Hope you enjoy!
A fun hip hop parody of Return of the Mack, a classic 90s R&B song.
I wrote and recorded this in my early days of 12 Step recovery, when I was making huge progress on a 30-day streak. I had an accountability partner who was always 2 days ahead of me, so I made this also for him, to congratulate his success.
I had the delusion that once I started 12 Step recovery I would never relapse again. That I found the solution, and now I was just gonna be "crushing it" with life.
While it has been that way most of the time, there are still relapses that bring me to some super low points. Relapse is part of the journey - there is no way around that.
After 20 years of addiction, it's foolish of me to think otherwise. So this is a blues-y hip hop piece describing those wrenching times when things feel bleak.
One of the meetings I go to is hosted by Gil, always a big supporter of the music. I thought it would be fun & silly to make a little intro jingle for our meetings (don't worry, it's never used :P)
Sometimes melodies just come to me, and that's what happened here. After the Serenity Prayer, people in meetings will often say "Keep Coming Back, It Works If You Work It!" and I just loved that. Something about the hope of it all, after so many years of desolation and dead-ends. This is a fun one to perform at open mics :)
I love puns, and this ridiculous song can attest to it. Very much inspired by the goodtimes in fellowship and the lack of caffeine in my life.
Not by me, but one of my absolute favorite pieces of recovery art. This song is just *chefs kiss* I hope to make a hi-fi cover of it someday, with harmonies (message me if you play guitar and wanna do this! :))
