Robin Williams is a powerful example of someone who stopped working their rigorous recovery program after 20 years, and paid the ultimate price.
In the Big Book (Doctor's Opinion) it says in the disturbingly casual way,
"There are many situations which arise out of the phenomenon of craving which cause men to make the supreme sacrifice rather than continue to fight."
Robin Williams describes it well in this video. He seems to be working a very shaky recovery program, believing his concern for his son will keep him sober. It didn't.

Reading it was a major push for me to get into recovery. His story is absolutely harrowing, and a potent reminder that without the 12 Steps of recovery and working a rigorous recovery program, countless addicts like myself follow in similar footsteps.
He died at the age of 54, both very rich and very famous (the disease of addiction did not care about those things).
